UIA-HYP Cup is an annual international student competition hosted by Tianjin University’s School of Architecture in China.
The 2014 topic was “The Unexpected City” - a city of wonder, a city where imagination, creativity, and the new have boldly surpassed what has been. The projects must offer a new perspective in space of living, nature, and respect for everyone with concrete architectural and urban projects. After all, home is not 'where the heart is' but where the house and neighborhood reside. As any international student competition, a high level of intellectual ambition, artistic originality, and freedom of thought was expected.
After the communism has fallen in Romania, a lot of various industrial sites have been partially or totally abandoned and left to rot. The “Inner Expansion” project aims to bring back to life these areas by implementing public functions like parks, spas, commercial spaces, living apartments or even multi-leveled vegetable farms. The main idea behind the project is to use the already existing structures in such way that the city won't have to expand over the natural landscape.
